The Savior’s Champion is a Fantasy Adventure novel about Tobias Kaya fighting in the Sovereign’s tournament to marry The Savior–despite his overall disinterest in her. This is the only fantasy novel on our list, which I believe makes it an important part of the project. Fantasy novels allow us to explore entirely new, unfamiliar worlds. We go in with no preconceived expectations, we don’t know what we don’t know. This fantasy novel in particular stood out to the group as a good choice because we believe it will provide interesting material for the blog posts. This novel is supposed to explore dark themes alongside romance and adventure. This provides a lot of opportunity for interpretations of controlling ideas, counter ideas, and close reading practice. This book presents new territory for us as a group as none of us have read it before, and I personally have never read a dark fantasy novel outside of the Young Adult genre. Through this book, we will learn how to apply fantastical elements to our own world.

Atonement is a postmodern novel, set in England throughout various decades, that follows Briony Tallis. The story tells of a mistake Briony made as a child, and later shows her reflecting on how this mistake has affected her life and the people in it. This is a dramatic novel that involves a lot of reflection done by the main character. It deals with themes such as love, class, guilt, and forgiveness. These thought provoking topics will provide us a good opportunity for close reading and analysis. These things will also make for interesting controlling and counter ideas. Overall, this book will help us further develop our close reading skills and our understanding of narrative structure.

The Murder Game is a mystery novel that follows Luke chase who escaped a kidnapping as a child. He then wants to be a regular teenager to enjoy himself with some freedom. He sneaks in the woods one night to have a drink with his friends and also flirt with British girl at school. By reading a mystery novel like this, we are expected to understand the importance of each context but also what the connections between each part of the story. This makes a good opportunity to experience what the story is about. We think that the theme and the experience of this book will make a sense of controlling ideas and was that we can develop our reading skills and the true meaning of narrative procedures.

All The Light We Cannot See is a historical fiction novel that follows Marie-Laurie, a blind young girl who lives in Nazi-occupied Paris during World War II. The novel also follows Werner, a German orphan whose skill with radio mechanics sees him placed in Hitler Youth and, eventually, the German army. Werner is taken through war-torn France, where his path and Marie-Laurie’s eventually cross. By reading a historical fiction novel, it makes us have a literary and historical understanding of the events in the book. It presents a real setting that had real problems during a time when many nations in the world were at their worst. Reading this presents a good opportunity to understand the historical events that the novel is based on and how they contributed towards making a narrative.
